1951-1962 Frazen

The Stanadrd Catalog of American Cars 1946-1975 lists this small sports car as being built by the Ray Greene Co. in Toledo, Ohio.  These cars consisted of a fiberglass body and were sold as a kit ($650.00) or as a complete car on a Henry J frame with a 6 cylinder engine ($2795.00)  Some options that could be aquired included fiberglass top and a transmission with overdrive.  The only photos I’ve found of the car are on the  Fiberglass Sports Cars website.  – It is unclear from my brief research the total number built.

SAAB Sonnet I

An artist that I’ve been speaking with about my car, and other old cars pointed me towards the SAAB Sonnet I cars for color and shape ideas.

Here are a few SAAB Sonnet I cars in various colors. – Again all photos were found through a Google search and I hope to someday see one of these neat sports racers in person.  They look like a really fun car to drive/ride along in. – Note:  I had a photo of 4 Sonnet I cars, including a green one, but cannot find it now. – I’ll update the post if I can locate my file.

The first photo (car sitting in the rain) in the series is of the prototype car.  It was taken by Staffan Vilcans (cc-by-sa) at the International SAAB Club Meeting in 2006.

Bill Tritt/Glasspar car

07fmc443418182aBill Tritt designed and built a number of great cars during this era and is considered by many to be the father of the kit-car movement.  His accomplishments exceed what space I have here, but I must say that his contributions are very much appriciated in both the car and boat world.

Alken Roadster

The Alken Roadster car was designed by William F. Pierson of Canoga Parl, California for the Alken Corporation of Venice, California.  There is a U.S. Patent for this car, 184,889, which was applied for on September 12, 1958 and patented on April 14, 1959.

Based on the limited information I could find, the car body was fiberglass and was designed to fit the VW/Volkswagon chassis.   I’ve been unable to determine how many of these were made, but the car has a “scoop” that runs the length of the car, similar to the design of my 1951 Kaiser Mystery.

In the Patent, there are references to several car designs and/or magazine articles.  These include Patent D. 176-277 Nallinger, Dec. 6, 1955, Motor Trend, April 1957, p 40. Darrin Mark II DKW and Motor Trend, May 1957, p 49, Frua Convertible.

I hope to aquire a photo of an actual Alken.  Until then, check out the Fiberglass Sports Cars website for a photo of one.  Geoff Hacker and his friends have done a great job in locating information on one of a kind, rare, unique, and interesting sports and fiberglass cars from the 1950s.  Without the  efforts of these men and the people who own and care for these cars, most of us would never know about, or ever see what one looks like.  http://www.fiberglasssportscars.com/Alken/Alken.htm

Flintridge Darrin /Mark II DKW

These unique cars were built in LaCanda/Flintridge, California in 1957 and from what I’ve been able to learn, 25 or fewer were made.  The car is build on a DKW (Auto Union) chassis with a 3 cylinder, 2 cycle engine and was front wheel drive. – Auto Union also built the Audi, so if you notice the trademark circles, that is why.  The Flintridge car was designed by Howard “Dutch” Darrin, who had designed a number of car for Kaiser, including the Kaiser Darrin sports car, and used a fiberglass body with a removable hardtop.  These are the first photos I’ve been able to find of the car, and wish to thank several members of the DKW and Microcar groups that I’ve spoken with.  I also pulled some of the information from athe April 1957 Motor Trend car magazine. – This car/magazine article also is referenced in the U.S. Patent for the Alken car. – I’ll post photos and information on the Alken soon.
